In the figure, capacitors C1 = 1 uF & C2 = 2 uF are charged to a potential difference of 100 V but with opposite polarity as shown. Switches S1 and S2 are now closed. What is potential difference between points a and b

Answer Explanation


The initial charge on the first capacitor is C1V = 1 x 100 = 100?C.  The initial charge on the second capacitor is 2 x 100 = 200?C.

As the circuit is completed the charge will flow until the potential difference on two capacitors become same.

Let the new common potential is V.

Let the new charge on the first capacitor is q1 and on second capacitor is q2.

The net initial charge on the system= 200-100 = 100 ?C.

We know that the net charge on the system is conserved. So, q1 + q2 = 100?C.

Also, V = q1/ C1 = q2/C2
                  
Solve these equations to get the values of V, q1 and q2.

The answer is V.
