Answer Explanation
Hi Jibin,
I am assuming that you have not yet started preparation for IIT JEE.
Yes, it is quite late to start preparing for IITJEE.
Still, I have a friend from IIT Roorkee who started studying at precisely this time and still made it to the IITs. So, it is definitely NOT impossible to get into the IITs even if you start preparation now.
However, you will have to completely forget about everything else and ONLY and ONLY focus on IITJEE for the next 4 months. Board exams cannot be your priority. If you study for them, you definitely not have enough time for IIT-JEE.
If you want to focus on IIT- JEE, this is what you could do:
First, here’s a list of chapters that are extremely important in each subject for IITJEE.
Physics
Mechanics, Fluids, Heat&Thermodynamics, Waves and Sound, Capacitors & Electrostatics, Magnetics, Electromagnetic Induction, Optics and Modern Physics.
Mathematics
Quadratic Equations & Expressions, Complex Numbers, Probability, Vectors, Matrices in Algebra; Circle, Parabola, Hyperbola in Coordinate Geometry; Functions, Limits, Continuity and Differentiability, Application of Derivatives, Definite Integral in Calculus.
Chemistry
Qualitative Analysis, Coordination Chemistry & Chemical Bonding in Inorganic Chemistry, Electrochemistry, Chemical Equilibrium in Physical Chemistry and Organic Chemistry, complete as a topic.
All the chapters above had a very high percentage contribution in IITJEE 2011, and so you must focus on them before focusing on other chapters.
If you have not yet prepared at all for IITJEE, yes, it can get a bit tough. However, there are still many months – and if you work hard, you could get through. So do understand that there is still a chance for you to crack IITJEE.
Which chapters should you begin with first?
In Physics, mechanics is the base and without it, you cannot really understand the other chapters well. So start with mechanics. You could follow the following order when you study Physics.
Mechanics (Kinematics, laws of motion, collisions-linear momentum, rotation) -->Fluid Mechanics --> Waves and Sound -->Electrostatics/Capacitors --> Magnetism--> Electromagnetic Induction --> Optics --> Modern Physics
In Chemistry, first complete physical chemistry and then organic chemistry. Inorganic chemistry can be studied after you have finished organic and physical chemistry because it involves mugging up things by heart. Your order of study can be:
Chemical Equilibrium --> Electrochemistry --> Organic Chemistry (All chapters) --> Chemical Bonding--> Co-ordination Chemistry --> Qualitative Analysis
In Mathematics, the order of study can be:
Quadratic Equations & Expressions --> Circle, Parabola, Hyperbola --> Functions --> Limits, Continuity and Differentiability--> Derivatives and Application of Derivatives (Application of Derivatives is very important) --> Indefinite and Definite Integrals(with very less focus on indefinite integrals and much more on definite integrals) -->Complex numbers --> Vectors --> Probability --> Matrices
Now the question is how to study all this? These points can help you.
1) 1) First of all, make a plan. You need not plan your entire study sessions till next year at once, of course, but make a plan for the next one month or so. Decide what topics in each subject you will complete in the next one month.
2) 2) After you complete studying any topic, attempt at least 50-100 good quality problems from that topic. The tests and problem sets provided by topIITcoaching.com will be sufficient. If you want to practice even more, then practice from the books published by Arihant Publications (all three subjects). They have some excellent problems. Whenever you have a doubt in any of the topics, use the “ask a doubt” facility offered by topIITcoaching.com and ask your doubt.
3) 3)After practicing problems, take at least one test related to that topic. topIITcoaching.com offers online tests related to each topic. Attempt those tests in the given time frame. If you cannot attempt a problem in the test, ask your doubt immediately.
4) 4)How much should you study everyday? That depends on you – but my experience states that at least 5-6 hours of study is a must. Make IITJEE preparation your priority for the next 3 months. Study for an hour or two, take a break, drink water, relax for 15-20 minutes, and then study again. Remember: you must work hard now – there is less time left – but if you do work hard you could actually be an IITian.
5) 5)Whenever you feel demotivated or tired, lie down on your bed, close your eyes, and imagine yourself securing a rank amongst the top 500 students in India. Imagine how you would feel if you actually got into IIT Delhi or Kanpur or Mumbai. Tell yourself that it is possible – if you study now.
6)After every month or so, review your progress. Ask yourself – am I moving at a fast pace? Am I slow? Then change your plan for the next month accordingly.
So basically, your strategy can be: *Plan for one month * Study the chapter thoroughly *Attempt 50-100 problems * Take tests * Ask Doubts * Move on to the next chapter
You might feel that your friends are way ahead of you, but you can still catch up. I have cleared IITJEE myself and I can assure you that even now if you study hard, understand the concepts and practice hard, it is possible to be reasonably prepared in the next 4 months.
Once you have finished the IITJEE syllabus, you can then attempt a lot of mock tests and full-length tests to further improve your efficiency in tests.
All the best to you :) Let’s hope you crack IITJEE.
