A capacitor of capacitance C1 = 1 x 10 -4 F is charged by pd of 110 V. It is connected in parallel to the terminals of a circuit consisting of two uncharged capacitors, connected in series and possessing the capacitances C2 = 2 x 10 -3 F, C3 = 3 x 10 -3 F. What charge(mC) will flow through the connecting wires ?

Answer Explanation


110C1 = 0.011C is the initial charge stored in C1. Now, this charge gets distributed amongst C1, C2 and C3.

In the final situation, both C2 and C3 have the same charge - say q. This is because the left plate of C3 and the right plate of C2 are connected to each other and independent of all other connections and hence have zero initial and zero final charge. That is the reason the charges on C2 and C3 are the same.

The final charge on C1 is 0.011 - q.

We can therefore apply Kirchoff's law and say that:

(0.011-q)/C1 - q/C2 - q/C3 = 0.

Solve this equation and get the value of q. The net charge flown through the wire is then 0.011 (the initial charge) - q.
