Doubt & Answer Explanation

Doubt

what is the relation between T1, T2 and T3 ?

Answer Explanation

If the pulley is massless then the tension in the same string will be the same, so T1 = T2.
(You can prove this by putting the net torque around the axle of the pulley to be zero because of the tension forces T1 and T2).

Applying Newton's second law, we have,

m3g - T3 = m3 a

T3 - T2 = m2a

T2 - m1g = m1a (As T1 = T2)

Adding all these equations, we get:

a = (m3-m1)g/(m1+m2+m3)

So, T3 = m3(g-a) and T2 = m1(g+a)

So T2 can be greater than T3 or lesser depending on the values of m1 and m3.
